Darcy had been reading in his library, an activity he had planned to take up his morning. It was not to be, however.
“I call upon your friendship,” Bingley said. “I ask that you put aside your prejudices and attend me on my call to Miss Bennet. I would have your opinion. I would know your thoughts on the lady’s merits. Not her mother or her money or her standing in society—her own personal merits.”
Bingley had been pressing Darcy for the past fifteen minutes to accompany him to the house on Gracechurch Street. Darcy had not yet positively refused, though he wondered at his own indecisiveness. There was no reason in the world that he should visit the Bennets. In truth, there was every reason against it. He should not wish to lead anybody, particularly Mrs. Bennet, to think he showed an interest. That lady had declared herself in a war to get her daughters married and so must be anathema to all freedom-seeking gentlemen. And yet, he would not mind so very much to encounter Miss Elizabeth Bennet again.
“I do not see why you should wish me there,” Darcy said, stalling again. “You know my penchant for revealing my opinions through my expressions, though I do not mean to do so. Mrs. Bennet would instantly perceive my disapproval and that could not help your case.”
Bingley threw himself into a chair. “You can do better than that, Darcy. Now that Miss Elizabeth Bennet has apprised you of that distressing habit, though I have been telling you so for years, you may do something to correct it. In any case, I call in my favor regarding Spartacus.”
Darcy sighed. Bingley had done him a great service just six months prior. Spartacus had got out of the house and Bingley had called upon all of his connections—from nobility down to beggars—to search for the dog. Bingley was perhaps the only man in the city who could rally so many at so diverse levels of society, but as the lead spy of the Protectors he had made it his business to become acquainted with all walks of life. Eyes were eyes and ears were ears, as he said.
As it turned out, Spartacus was eventually found by Bingley’s own footman in Hyde Park, gleefully chasing a group of screaming ladies on horseback.
“Very well,” Darcy said. “I cannot refuse you, as you call in the favor. Though I still say I think I shall not do you much good.”
Despite Darcy’s assurance that he would only be a hindrance, he found himself glad that he never had to make a decision regarding visiting the Bennets, one way or the other.
